Reflecting our ambition to be known as a global leader in environmental sustainability, we are leading the way in cutting our carbon footprint, continually setting ambitious carbon-reduction targets, investing in sustainable technologies, and introducing new initiatives to lower our environmental impact.

More than a third of all energy used on campus is low-carbon, with 100% of all electricity coming from renewable sources. We have made significant progress on campus to improve solar generation, make heating buildings more efficient, and add energy-efficient equipment in labs and catering outlets.

Living sustainably

We have since 2009.
We have helped prevent more than half a million plastic bottles from being thrown away each year on campus by introducing refillable drink bottles and and removing plastic straws from bars and cafes.
We encourage staff and students to take action to reduce their collective emissions through and . Our Sustainability Team also runs a every year, celebrating sustainability action and raising awareness in the community of ways to get involved.

Green investments

After securing 拢2.2m grant funding, we are working to install a large water source heat pump in the University鈥檚 Energy Centre. Once fully operational, the heat pump will reduce the University鈥檚 emissions by 1,500 tonnes of carbon per year, equivalent to a 10% reduction in emissions from buildings across the entire University estate.
We have removed all fossil fuel shares and bonds from our investment portfolio and now back more green schemes. We continue to review and strengthen our investment approach.

Energy efficiency

We aim to become a Net Zero Carbon university by 2030 and have already made the most significant reduction of any research-intensive university (based on analysis of HESA data).

This work also includes prioritising renewable energy sources, reducing business travel emissions, increasing the energy efficiency of our buildings, and taking steps to align our activities with the .

This accreditation demonstrates the University's commitment to sustainable practices and reducing the impact of our consumption as well as our ethical support for fairtrade communities and livelihoods.
