Overview
Module aims and purpose
This module focuses on developing the practitioner’s role within the pharmacy and multidisciplinary team. Practitioners will demonstrate their team-working skills through supervised learning events that require them to effectively communicate clinical information to pharmacy colleagues and other health care professionals. Practitioners will build professional relationships with the wider multidisciplinary team using their expertise to provide support, education and training. Practitioners will build on their portfolios to include evidence of their collaboration with others and contribution to patient care. Facilitated workshops will further practitioners’ knowledge of conditions within gastroenterology and endocrinology. Portfolio activities will enable practitioners to apply their learning in one or both of these topics, depending on their area of practice.
The module learning outcomes, portfolio activities and assessments are mapped to the Royal Pharmaceutical Society’s (RPS) Post-registration Foundation Pharmacist Curriculum (2021) and Foundation Pharmacist Framework (2019) to support practitioners in becoming credentialled through the RPS.
Module learning outcomes
By the end of the module, it is expected that students will be able to:
- Work in partnership with multidisciplinary colleagues within and across sectors, providing timely information and advice, to facilitate the seamless transition of patient care between settings.
- Effectively influence prescribing decisions by communicating knowledge and recommendations to a wide range of healthcare professionals
- Recognise the value of the wider pharmacy and multidisciplinary team in the delivery of patient care and draws upon this support network appropriately to make patient referrals and gain performance feedback
- Use their expertise to design, prepare and provide effective education and training to other healthcare professionals and pharmacy colleagues
Module content
The module workshops will focus on the topics of gastroenterology and endocrinology. Practitioners can choose which of these will be the therapeutic focus of their workplace-based learning. They will develop their professional portfolios to evidence the application of clinical knowledge and effective communication skills to optimise medication use whilst establishing good working relationships. Coursework and assessment will enable students to demonstrate their ability to communicate with a variety of healthcare professionals using appropriate methods when providing recommendations, delivering training or seeking advice. Over the course of the module, practitioners will proactively participate in peer review activities and reflect on feedback received.
Structure
Teaching and learning methods
The module consists of a mixture of face-to-face and online learning. Learning outcomes are supported by three collaborative workshops that use a mixture of presentations, discussions and problem-based and case-based learning, facilitated by the programme team, specialist pharmacists and other healthcare professionals. The workshops are underpinned by directed learning via Blackboard and self-directed learning. A significant proportion of the programme is workplace-based learning through which practitioners will develop a professional portfolio to demonstrate their knowledge, skills and behaviours.Ìý
This module is taught over Semester 2 and Summer. The 200 study hours listed below under Summer indicate the total number of study hours for the whole duration of the module.Ìý

Penalties for late submission of summative assessment
The Support Centres will apply the following penalties for work submitted late:
Assessments with numerical marks
- where the piece of work is submitted after the original deadline (or a DAS-agreed extension as a reasonable adjustment indicated in your Individual Learning Plan): 10% of the total marks available for that piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each calendar day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of three calendar days;
- where the piece of work is submitted up to three calendar days after the original deadline (or a DAS-agreed extension as a reasonable adjustment indicated in you Individual Learning Plan), the mark awarded due to the imposition of the penalty shall not fall below the threshold pass mark, namely 40% in the case of modules at Levels 4-6 (i.e. undergraduate modules for Parts 1-3) and 50% in the case of Level 7 modules offered as part of an Integrated Masters or taught postgraduate degree programme;
- where the piece of work is awarded a mark below the threshold pass mark prior to any penalty being imposed, and is submitted up to three calendar days after the original deadline (or a DAS-agreed extension as a reasonable adjustment indicated in your Individual Learning Plan), no penalty shall be imposed;
- where the piece of work is submitted more than three calendar days after the original deadline (or a DAS-agreed extension as a reasonable adjustment indicated in your Individual Learning Plan): a mark of zero will be recorded.
Assessments marked Pass/Fail
- where the piece of work is submitted within three calendar days of the deadline (or a DAS-agreed extension as a reasonable adjustment indicated in your Individual Learning Plan): no penalty will be applied;
- where the piece of work is submitted more than three calendar days after the original deadline (or a DAS-agreed extension as a reasonable adjustment indicated in your Individual Learning Plan): a grade of Fail will be awarded.
Where a piece of work is submitted late after a deadline which has been revised owing to an extension granted through the Assessment Adjustments policy and process (self-certified or otherwise), it will be subject to the maximum penalty (i.e., considered to be more than three calendar days late). This will also apply when such an extension is used in conjunction with a DAS-agreed extension as a reasonable adjustment.

You are strongly advised to ensure that coursework is submitted by the relevant deadline. You should note that it is advisable to submit work in an unfinished state rather than to fail to submit any work.
